Top Prospects from Sickels 2012 Top 20 Team Rankings


2) Anthony Rendon, 3B, Grade A-: Borderline A. I want to see how his shoulder is, if his power and arm strength come back fully, before giving him the Grade A imprimatur. I still expect him to be an excellent player.

Matt Barnes, RHP, Grade B+. Has the build and stuff of a rotation anchor, and improved every year in college. Still some rough edges and he won't get to the majors as fast as Trevor Bauer or Danny Hultzen, but he could be a real steal at 19th-overall in the '11 draft.

George Springer, OF, Grade B+: Much broader tool base than Singleton, but exactly two years and one day older, which makes a difference. I think he made real progress with his swing and contact ability this year. Impressive power/speed/walks package even if he doesn't hit for a high average.

3) Rymer Liriano, OF, Grade B+: You can make a case to rank him above Rizzo, although they are very different players. Five Tool/Seven Skill potential is obvious, and he made strides with the strike zone last year. Scouts love him and the numbers are catching up.


4) Mike Olt, 3B, Grade B: Good power, draws walks, very strong defensive player. Main worry here is high strikeout rate but I expect he will adapt.

Mikie Mahtook, OF, Grade B: Good career start in the Arizona Fall League but everyone hits there. Grade could go higher once he faces better pitching. Strong across-the-board tools and really blossomed as a hitter the last two seasons at LSU. Still can't believe he lasted to the end of the first round.

Brian Goodwin, OF, Grade B: Some risk here until we see him play, but I love the combination of power, speed, and walks he showed in college. Swing needs some work, but has all the tools and 20/20 potential

Manny Banuelos, LHP, Grade B: Borderline B+. He got a B last year and I can't bump his grade up a notch given the command difficulties he had in Double-A. He's still a fine prospect, however, projecting as a number three starter if all goes well.

Dellin Betances, RHP, Grade B: Borderline B+. He's got plenty of stuff but command wobbles prevent the B+ at this time. Ceiling is a tad higher than Banuelos, but I'm less confident that he'll reach it. Depending on what happens with his command, he could develop into anything from a number two starter to a disappointing mop-up man.

3) Javier Baez, SS-3B, Grade B: 2011 first-round pick. Outstanding bat speed, should hit for average and power. Questions revolve around future position as well as volatile personality. Higher ceiling than Jackson or Rizzo but we need to clear these issues up first.

3) Sebastian Valle, C, Grade B-: Scouting reports remain more impressive than the numbers and his plate discipline needs work, but he's got good potential on both sides of the ball and is just 21.

5) Dante Bichette, Jr, 3B, Grade B: Way ahead of where his father was at the same stage. Controls the strike zone well, doesn't strike out much for a young power hitter, and third base defense proved to be much better than expected.

Robert Ross (Robbie Ross), LHP, Grade B: Remained effective after promotion to Double-A, which is a very good sign. Doesn't have as high a ceiling as some other arms in the system, but also has a higher floor. Possible number three or four starter.

Andrew Chafin, LHP, Grade B: I'm being more cautious here than with Bradley even though Chafin is a college guy; that's an instinctual call at this point. He has enough upside to rank higher next year if pro adjustment goes well. Could be number two starter or (at worst) a power reliever.

13) Jaff Decker, OF, Grade B-: Seems to improve his physical conditioning every year, even stole 15 bases in '11, strong throwing arm. Patient to a fault, needs to find balance between aggression and passivity. Could put up huge numbers at Tucson.

Adrian Salcedo, RHP, Grade B-: Scouts outside the organization are lukewarm on him, but he keeps throwing strikes and getting people out and doesn't turn 21 until February.


Juan Oramas, LHP, Grade B-: Short, bad body, but exhibits strong command of solid southpaw stuff, succeeded in Double-A. Could develop into a very nice fourth starter, or possibly some tasty trade bait.

Andrew Susac, C, Grade B-: Hasn't played yet, but based on what we saw in college, should be a steady defensive catcher with an above-average arm, producing power. We'll have to see if his pure hitting skills hold up.

Larry Greene, OF, Grade B-: Huge power, although reports differ about how polished the rest of his bat is and we have no pro data yet. Wanna dream? Think Ryan Howard with enough mobility to play the outfield. Stock will shoot higher next year if that is remotely accurate.

J.R. Graham, RHP, Grade B-: Electric arm out of Santa Clara, progress of secondary pitches will determine if he starts or relieves at higher levels. Stock could be much higher next year.

Brett Eibner, OF, Grade B-: Another hard-to-handle grade, excellent power potential, draws walks, but contact issues look serious. This is a partial injury mulligan and he needs to get the bat going in '12 to retain this type of rating.

Tyler Collins, OF, Grade B-: I really like this product of the 2011 draft and this is an aggressive grade.

Matt Dean, 3B, Grade B-: Another upside guy from 2011 draft that we need to see in pro ball. Potential to hit for power, hit for average, and provide solid defense at third.

Tommy La Stella, 2B, Grade B-: Outstanding performance in pro debut after successful career at Coastal Carolina. May not stick at second base, but I believe in the bat and he would be an impressive prospect even if he moves to the outfield. Combination of power and low strikeout rate stands out.


8) Levi Michael, SS, Grade B-: No pro data to work with, but based on college performance and scouting reports, I think he can be a solid regular and useful at the top of the order, OBP with speed-type.

7) John Hellweg, RHP, Grade B-: Weird season in the Cal League, was horrible in relief (7.71 ERA, 33/31 K/BB in 26 innings), but suddenly figured out how to pitch as a starter (2.12 ERA, 80/28 K/BB in 64 innings, 5.00 GO/AO). Upper-90s fastball, slider, changeup, 6-9 height. Is the breakthrough sustainable? If it is, will be at least a B+ a year from now.

Jose Iglesias, SS, Grade B-: Glove-only player at this point. His bat has been awful so far, but young for Triple-A and improvement is plausible. No power, might hit for a decent average someday. Defense superb.

David Goforth, RHP, Grade C+: Would rank higher on pure velocity, but secondary pitches are still in question. If he refines them, grade could be much higher next year.

Max Kepler, OF, Grade C+: Uber-athletic German outfielder showed little power in the Appy League, but given age (just 18 in 2011) and background he remains intriguing.

15) Jon Pettibone, RHP, Grade C+: Inning-eater type with good control of average stuff, fine year in High-A although strikeout rates not that impressive. I have nothing objective to back this up but I like him better than the numbers say I should.

Charlie Tilson, OF, Grade C+: Part of a large group of toolsy high schoolers picked up by the Cardinals in '11 draft. Will need a lot of development work, but could develop into leadoff force.

13) Cito Culver, SS, Grade C+: Good defensive reports, still very raw with the bat but was younger than most of his competition. Grade will rise when/if he makes offensive progress.

Josh Osich, LHP, Grade C+: Borderline B-: Power southpaw, needs to prove his arm is healthy before ranking higher. Does he start or relieve?

Mike Kelly, RHP, Grade C+: Intriguing high school arm from 2011 draft, somewhat raw but has upside. Could rank much higher next year if he can improve secondary stuff and command.

Steve Parker, 3B, Grade C+: Power production dropped in Double-A but still controls strike zone well. Nothing special with the glove, but could be useful role player.

Aaron Shipman, OF, Grade C+: Draws walks, has blazing speed, no power yet but still young enough to develop it. Transition from New York-Penn League to Midwest League in 2012 will be illuminating.

Niko Goodrum, SS, Grade C+: Outstanding tools, took a big step forward late in the year for Elizabethton, hit .341/.438/.489 in August with greatly improved plate discipline. Still raw, but this is progress.

Kyle Winkler, RHP, Grade C+: TCU product from 2011 draft could rank much higher next year if elbow injury suffered late in college season doesn't hold him back.

Brian Flynn, LHP, Grade C+: Big lefty out of Wichita State (seventh round) showed more polish than expected to go with his 90-95 MPH fastball.

Delino DeShields, 2B, Grade C+: Another high-ceiling low-floor high-risk guy with tools who lacks refinement. Hit just .220 in the Sally League but swiped 30 bases.

Nick Ahmed, SS, Grade C+: Not going to be a star but should be steady and consistent, good utility type at worst and has a chance to get beyond that.

Angelo Gumbs, 2B, Grade C+: Makes a nice double play combo with Culver and they should move up together. Needs polish on both sides of the ball, but tools are here.

Adam Warren, RHP, Grade C+: Borderline B-: Often paired with Phelps. I like Phelps a little better even though Warren gets more press. For many teams Warren's ability to eat innings with decent stuff would get him a full rotation audition in 2012.

Rafael Ortega, OF, Grade C+: Didn't wow with his stats in the Sally League, but has tools, some speed and power potential, good glove, still just 20.

Todd Cunningham, OF, Grade C+: Didn't hit as well as anticipated, but still has time to live up to draft pedigree, although like Ahmed I see him more as a steady role player than a star.

Jiovanni Mier, SS, Grade C: The Astros have not given up on him, still young, athletic, respected defense, but hitting is very questionable.

Keenyn Walker, OF, Grade C: Extremely athletic supplemental first round pick from Central Arizona Junior College could be leadoff force with a strong glove. However, he's got serious contact problems, fanning 64 times in 162 at-bats in Low-A. High-risk/high-reward.

Chris Marlowe, RHP, Grade C: Oklahoma State right-hander has above-average fastball, nasty curve, and incredible K/IP ratios in college. Could move quickly in relief if his command is sufficient.
