27.4 Vipers select: Deshorn Lake, RHP, Bos I picked a guy who didn't sign which is embarrassing. If there are no objections, I will re-pick tomorrow. I will give it some time to see if anyone objects. If there are objections from the 4 of us still picking I won't make a pick this round. No big deal. Others have repicked guys who haven't signed, but I want to be above board and not just edit my pick

Boulder Ball Busters pick;
27.17 OF: Jason Coats (BAL)
Coats had a banner 2010, setting a Texas Christian record with 99 hits, helping the Horned Frogs reach the College World Series for the first time and starring in the Cape Cod League. A strong encore might have carried him into the first round, but he has had a lackluster spring, leading scouts to wonder whether he has a true plus tool. After hitting .314 with wood bats on the Cape, he batted .324 with metal this season. His swing looked longer and his pitch recognition looked less sharp than it did a year ago. Six-foot-2 and 190 pounds, Coats has a sound approach and provides average raw power from the right side of the plate. His speed, arm strength and defense are fringy to average, so he fits best in left field. A team that envisions Coats becoming the .280/20-homer hitter he looked like a year ago could grab him in the second or third round, but he no longer figures to go higher than that.

Boulder Ball Busters pick;
27.18 SP: Vaughn Covington (CIN)
The X factor for Canada is righthander Vaughn Covington, who didn't pitch for the junior national team this year because he had Tommy John surgery in September. When healthy, Covington showed a power arm and sat 90-92 mph with reports that he had touched 96. Covington has a strong, 6-foot-5 frame and his curveball showed promise as well. He has resumed throwing but won't get back on a mound until after the signing deadline. Covington is being heavily recruited by American junior colleges, or he could opt to remain in Canada and just work out for teams leading up to next year's draft. A team willing to take a risk on Covington could get a bargain if he regains his pre-surgery form.
