Rationale: This has been debated somewhat. Since we only allow one franchise player per team, teams that have another franchise eligible player now have to allow that player to go back into free agency.
Allowing these players to instead be traded to a team with no franchise player would help the competitiveness of the league as another team can now have a good player at a reasonable price AND there will be more cap space available in free agency. Seems like a win-win.
The main argument against this seems to be that these contracts have expired and the players are free agents. It would seem, though, that if there is some mechanism by which a contract can be extended, that contract has not officially expired. That option/right/mechanism is an asset and should be available to trade just like any other asset.
It would be valuable to see how the league feels about this.
