I know people disagree with me when I suggest that we have a lack of activity in this league. This attitude is a pretty good example of one of the drawbacks to that lack of activity. Take a look at some of the salaries players have been signed for in free agency in this league (both in season and off season). Because there is not a full group of participants in free agency, we have vastly lower salaries here than in any normal league. It skews our perspective. In his first full NL season in 2021, Stroman was a top 20 or better SP in K%, ERA, WHIP and IP. He was a strong fantasy starting pitcher. If you want to see if that was an aberration, he was a top 25 SP in all of those categories from 2016-2021. In a 20 team league, he's a clear SP2. I play in four leagues similar to this one. His salaries in those leagues are $11.6M, $11M, $9.6M and $7.9M. He's a bargain here at $6.5M, we just don't see it because we are used to too many owners not trying in free agency. Look at the cap space teams had left over during last season here. The number of teams here carrying $20M or more in cap space is a total joke. Overall, just teams carrying $10M or more in cap space totaled over $250M. That means that about 12% of the total cap space available was sitting around in unused money. Our free agent salaries should be a lot higher. This says a lot of things that we should look into as a league, but for the purposes of this thread, it says Stroman is a value at $6.5M. I don't particularly care for him as a Mets' fan, but he's good and he's underpriced. Sorry, no poetry

Sorry, no poetry I know there is frustration, but your assessment is a tad off, there are several like mine where I have all y2y players and don't need to spend outside of 1 or 2 players. Which keeps salary down since owners like myself don't need to bid high to fill out a roster. I have spent the last few years compiling picks and waiting on players and now i have a steady stream the only way to change things is to not hand out so many comp picks..I mean lets be honest you get a 1st round comp pick at 10mil but a max player is 20 mil that leaves me no reason to match i'll take the pick every time and it seems like most do.

I hear you Earl and I understand what you are saying, but you inadvertently made my point. Yes, you have a ton of y2y players and you finished last season with more than $40 million in cap space. You also didn't even sniff the playoffs. Not enough of the owners here care enough to do things that owners in normal leagues do to be competitive. In any other league in which I play, a team like yours would have dealt several of those y2y guys to acquire some (likely somewhat expensive) expiring contracts to try to actually win the league. Especially if you feel you will have a 'steady stream' of young players in the future. In those other leagues, owners would not be so excited about all of their y2y guys when so many of them are not even league average performers. There are several owners in the league who take your approach as if simply having a lot of y2y players is a goal in itself and winning is not any sort of priority. There are also plenty of owners for whom this does not apply. They simply don't participate in free agency on any meaningful level.
The other part of your comment that plays into our issues here is the comp picks. Because we have so many owners who refuse to make or trade their picks, those later round comp picks still can become pretty good players. By the fifth or sixth round here, even our comp picks have equivalent value to third or fourth rounders in other leagues where all picks are made.
The bottom line is that we don't have a competitive league and that skews the value of everything. Some guys don't use their cap. Some don't ever want to trade. Some don't make most of their picks. One or two of our owners fit all of those categories.
In the end, it's all fine. Really. I know I keep harping on this because I play in so many leagues that are competitive where most owners are making an effort to have the best team they can have. Those leagues are infinitely more fun than this one. I want this league to be just as much fun as those. So might wonder why I am still here. I'm an old retired guy with lots of free time. I play golf. I play with my grandkids. Mostly though, I like to fool around here and make some trades with the guys who trade and draft a bunch of young guys and see how they turn out. I like to try to help out our new owners, hoping they might eventually become the kind of owners we need to be a more active league.
