Owners need to have an open 40 man roster spot for any players won in free agency. While the move to clear a spot, if necessary, does not to be instantaneous, there is no grace period either. The 48 hour contract clock is only that. The player is part of your 40 man as soon as you win a bid.
This may not seem like a big deal, but there can be at least a bit of an unfair advantage, especially during the early days of spring training when player news comes out every day. We've already had this come into play.
If you are close to winning a bid, please make room for the player as not everyone is on all of the time.
In the free agency guidelines in our archives, there is a lost draft pick penalty for a second violation of this policy. I'm not looking to take any picks from anyone so I have not included this in the current rules as yet. I honestly didn't expect it would be a problem.
